BANGKOK, Dec 25 (TNA) — The People Power Party (PPP), aligned with ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, captured 233 of 480 seats in the House of Representatives to win last Sunday’s national election, Thailand’s Election Commission announced on Tuesday.

In its announcement of the official poll results, the EC said the Democrat Party was second with 165 seats, while the Chart Thai Party finished third with 37, Puea Pandin 24, Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana 9, Matchimatippataya 7 and Pracharaj 5.

Meanwhile, Somchai Juengprasert, EC member for investigation, said the first batch of red and yellow cards–a tool to disqualify elected candidates accused of wrongdoing–would be released within 15 days.

He confirmed that there would definitely be red cards from some candidates elected in the general election.

An elected candidate who receives a red card will be banned from running in the by-election, already set by the EC for January 13. Those receiving yellow cards will however be allowed to re-contest in the polls.

Mr. Somchai said he did not feel the urgency in issuing the red and yellow cards which he described as “merely a legal and democratic process,” adding that the EC could carry on disqualifying MPs even after the
inauguration of the parliamentary session.
