BANGKOK, Oct 1 (TNA) - A dozen Buddhist monks and about 100 Buddhist laypersons gathered outside the Myanmar embassy in the Thai capital to protest the reported killings of monks and civilians by State Peace and Development Council forces inside Thailand’s neighbouring country to the west.

The monks and laymen prayed for the slain monks and other pro-democracy demonstrators and urged the military junta to stop the inhumane crackdowns in Yangon, Myanmar’s former capital, Mandalay, its second largest city, and elsewhere.

Police officers stood guard outside the embassy as the protesters prayed, chanted and called on the Myanmar government through its Bangkok-based diplomats to stop the killing, observe human rights and release the detained  monks and other pro-democracy demonstrators.

Sathian Wiphonmaha of Thailand’s Buddhist Protection Network, said a letter of protest against the ongoing atrocities inside Myanmar will be submitted to the Yangon government via the Thai foreign ministry. (TNA)-E008
